Global Climate Strike 2019: Is Greta Thunberg’s movement still worldwide now?

Greta Thunberg and her activist group ‘school strike for climate’ are continuing their protests, even during the COVID-19 pandemic and with social distancing restrictions in place, in an attempt to ‘save the planet’ and ‘save lives’.

Even though everyone is in a global crisis due to Coronavirus, many are still protesting their views under the ‘School Strike’ initiative that Greta Thunberg has created. People have been urged to follow all of the COVID guidelines to stay safe whilst in attendance: keeping two metres away and wearing masks which they are abiding to.

Her rally really kick started in September 2019, when six million people joined together to campaign about protecting the planet and marched for urgent action on climate change. The protests took place across 4,500 locations in 150 countries. Many protestors across the continents waved signs and chanted their beliefs in what could be the biggest ever organised climate change demonstration. Organisers hoped that these demonstrations were ‘just the beginning’ to their fight.

“This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope? How dare you! You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction. And all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you! You are failing us. But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you. And if you choose to fail us, I say: We will never forgive you.”

These protests are aimed to stop people’s actions within society that increase the atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, dumping waste and agriculture.

Miss Thunberg actions have inspired schoolchildren and adults around the world to take up the fight in today’s society, during the worst circumstances. Even a global pandemic can’t stop these people pushing their views and opinions for change.
